Greg Fitzgerald retired QANTAS Captain, BHCC Member (since 2011)
Greg Fitzgerald spent 35 years as an international pilot with Qantas Airways. For 25 of those years he served as a Captain on the Boeing 767 and 747s. Over his career he held multiple senior management roles in Qantas Flight Operations and Qantas Flight Training, being the Head of Training of both the 767 and 747 fleets.
During his career he was in command of many interesting charter flights, some of which included the first civilian medical evacuation flight from Bali following the 2002 bombing, bringing troops home from Iraq and Paralympians home from Rio. He was in command of one of the two COVID-19 repatriation flights from Wuhan at the beginning of the current crisis. He also ran the Qantas Antarctic Scenic Charter program, conducting more than 20 flights over the Antarctic continent.
One of Greg’s final duties, prior to retirement from Qantas in early 2021, was to be part of the crew to deliver Qantas’ final B747, to the Mojave Desert aircraft graveyard. This was after the 747 aircraft type had served 50 years with Qantas.
Greg is currently an Adjunct Professor and aviaition advisor, in the School of Aviation, at Griffith University in Brisbane and runs his own aviaition consulting business.
