Sail for Cancer Research / BarbeCURE on the Water

"FUN – EFFECTIVE – SIMPLE"

These three words voiced by Commodore Bruce Callaghan at the presentation to Cure Cancer Australia, sum up the ...

BHCC INAUGURAL BARBECURE 2018

Hearing the splashes and laughter of both children and adults swimming off the back of ten rafted-up boats, along with the remarkable smell of sausages and onion cooking on BBQs, many have said that the expectation of this Club Day was exceeded.

The generosity of local businesses and club members, through donation of their vessels, auction and raffle prizes as well as sausages, onions, bread and sauces could only explain the fantastic result of raising $25,000 for Cure Cancer Australia – that is 500 hours of research!

This year the focus was on the fact that one hour of research costs $50 – therefore to participate in the day members and guests were asked to make a minimum tax-deductible donation of “one hour of research” to Cure Cancer Australia prior to the day. By utilising an online application designed by CCA to capture donations for BarbeCUREs, even members who were unable to attend donated generous amounts towards the event. When the flotilla left the Marina on the Sunday morning the club had already raised just short of $10,000!

With military precision, great boating skill, ropes and fenders, the flotilla achieved, as far as I am aware since joining in the club in 2011, the largest single raft-up of BHCC vessels in the south-east end of America Bay. This feat was only slightly surpassed in the unveiling, by “one to remain anonymous” club member, of the “life-jacket nappy” or is it the “nappy life-jacket” or the “jacket –life nappy?! Sounds like a bit of a “Trilogy” to me!

Best Dressed boat was won by Scott & Vicki Leavers, "Araluen" and Most Raised boat (inaugural trophy) was won by "Portia", Nicky and Darren Vaux. Looking forward to more members, bringing their boats, filled with family and friends, to achieve another fun, effective and simple event next year!
